Somebody said "Mom" in a store aisle last week and your head turned before your brain even processed it. That name lives in your body now. It gets first response, top of the list, ahead of everything else, and most days that is exactly right and you would not trade it.
But there is another name under that one. The one you were born with. The one people called across a room before anyone attached a title to you.
And if it took you a second to remember it belongs to you too, you are not alone in that, and you are not broken for it.
Here is what nobody tells you when you become the person everyone calls for. You do not lose yourself in one dramatic moment. It happens in a thousand small answered calls, each one reasonable, each one loving.
You show up for the lunches and the pickups and the everyone-needs-something-at-once mornings, and you get good at it. You get so good that "Mom" starts to feel like the whole address. Not because you gave anything up on purpose, but because you kept showing up and the showing up added up.
The woman with your first name did not go anywhere. She has been in there the whole time, answering to a different name, waiting for you to remember she counts too.
When I feel furthest from the woman I used to be, I move my body. Not for how it looks. For how it clears my head enough to hear myself think again.
Twenty minutes of movement is a stress reliever before it is anything else, and that is the part I want you to hear. The physical part is the door into the mental part, because taking care of yourself physically starts helping your head almost right away. You go in feeling scattered and you come out feeling like a person with a name.
Your body is the only temple you get. You take care of it not to shrink and not to impress anybody, but so you can carry what you are carrying without it crushing you. That care is where I keep finding the woman I thought I lost.
Somewhere along the line a lot of us picked up the idea that answering to your own name again means neglecting the people who call you Mom. It does not. Those two things are not in a fight.
Sometimes putting yourself first, ahead of everyone else for even a few minutes, is the exact thing that makes getting through possible at all. That is not selfishness. It is fuel.
You cannot pour from a woman who forgot her own name.
And women do not get the option to step back anyway. We keep going, as moms, as daughters, as sisters, as friends, without the breaks other people seem to get. So the small act of claiming a little time for yourself is not a luxury.
It is maintenance on the one engine that runs everything else.
Here is the part that ties it all together. When you take the time to work on yourself, when you move and rebuild and slowly answer to your own name again, there is a small audience clocking every bit of it.
They see you go through the depths of it and come out standing. They see a woman who is somebody's mom and also fully, unmistakably herself. That is not a distraction from raising them.
That is you handing them a blueprint for their own hard seasons someday.
You are not modeling perfection for them. You are modeling a woman who lost the thread and found it again, on purpose, out loud. Kids do not forget watching that.
Faith runs through this for me, and the honest version is not the tidy one. It is the version where you cannot see the reason yet and you keep going anyway.
I believe God knew what He was doing when He made the woman. She is a force built for resilience, the kind that comes back stronger after every setback even when the coming back makes no sense in the moment. So when the season feels unfair and you cannot see how the woman with your first name gets to come back too, you trust the process anyway.
You keep going.
Life turns around for you the minute you start turning it around for yourself. That is not a promise I can guarantee, but it is what I have watched be true, and it starts smaller than you think.
You will not get the exact old you back, and honestly, you would not want her. She had not been through what you have been through. She had not learned what these hard seasons taught you.
What you are actually doing is becoming somebody new. Rebuilding, rebranding, remembering the name that was always yours while adding everything you have earned since. That is the whole idea behind what we do at OK Tease Co., building strength on the days you do not feel strong, so the woman you are becoming has somewhere to stand.
So the next time your head snaps toward "Mom" in a crowded room, let it. Answer proud. Then, later, quiet, when the house settles, say your own name out loud and remember it belongs to you too.
Both of them do. You get to be both. You've got this.
