The Prayer You Stopped Praying Because It Felt Pointless The One You Quit Saying Out Loud There's a prayer you used to say almost every night. The same ...
There's a prayer you used to say almost every night. The same words, over and over, asking for the same thing. And then one day you noticed you weren't saying it anymore.
Not a decision. Not a dramatic moment where you shook your fist at the sky. You just stopped.
It felt like dropping coins into a machine that never gives anything back, and at some point you didn't have the coins to spare.
If you've been there, you're not weak and you're not faithless. You're tired. Those are two very different things, and the world loves to confuse them.
You prayed for the thing. The money to stretch. The season to turn.
A door to open somewhere, anywhere. And the answer, as far as you could tell, was silence.
Silence is the hardest answer to sit with because it doesn't tell you anything. A no, you can grieve and move past. A yes, you can celebrate.
But nothing? Nothing just leaves you standing there wondering if anyone was ever on the other end.
So you did the reasonable thing. You stopped asking for something that wasn't coming.
Here's the part that's genuinely hard, and I'm not going to tidy it up for you. Faith isn't the version where everything suddenly clicks into place and you understand why it all happened the way it did. Sometimes you never get the why.
The version I actually believe in is messier. It's trusting God's process even when it feels unfair, even when you can't see one single reason to keep believing, and you keep walking anyway.
That walking is the prayer. Not always the words. Sometimes you're too worn down for words, and the fact that you got up at all is the thing you handed over that day.
I've learned this the long way. The thing you were praying for and the thing you actually needed were almost never the same thing.
You asked for the exact door to open. Instead a different one did, and it took you months to realize that was the better one. You asked for the hard season to end on your timeline, and it ended on one you'd never have chosen, and somehow that worked out too.
Think about every woman who prayed for the grass to be greener somewhere else, and then found out the grass got green the minute she started watering her own. Life turns around for you right about the time you start turning it around for yourself. That's not a slogan.
That's just what tends to happen.
Maybe the prayer didn't need to stop. Maybe it needed to change.
For a long time you asked for the circumstance to change. There's a different prayer underneath that one, and it's quieter: give me the strength to carry this until it does. That one gets answered all the time, and you probably didn't notice because the answer showed up as you, still standing.
The strength to keep going is itself the thing you were asking for. You just expected it to arrive as a rescue instead of as your own two feet.
This is where I'll be honest about what actually helped me in the seasons the prayers felt pointless. Moving my body. Not to shrink it, not to look a certain way, but because it was the only thing that quieted my head when nothing else would.
Movement is a stress reliever before it's anything else, and your body is the one temple you get. Taking care of it physically started helping me mentally almost right away, and the mental part was what let me keep believing at all.
Some days the whole prayer was a ten-minute walk where I didn't say a word to God and He didn't say one back, and I came home steadier anyway. That counted. That was the full circle.
You don't have to say the words perfectly. You don't even have to believe they're landing. You just have to be willing to open your mouth again, or your heart, and that's a lot smaller than it feels right now.
Start with the honest version. "I don't know if You're listening, but I'm here and I'm still asking." That's a real prayer.
That's maybe the realest one there is.
This whole community, OK Tease Co., exists for women in exactly this spot. Not to hand you a formula, and not because anybody here has it all figured out. Just so you know another woman has stood where you're standing, worn out and wondering, and kept going.
Nobody is going to throw you a party for praying again. There's no moment where the sky opens and everything you waited for arrives at once.
You'll just pick the prayer back up on some ordinary Tuesday, quietly, with no guarantee it's going to work out the way you want. And you'll keep going anyway, because that's what women do. We don't get to step back, so we step up, again and again, even when we can't see the reason yet.
You're stronger than this season. You always were. The prayer you stopped praying is still waiting for you, and so is the woman you're becoming on the other side of it.
