The Fifteen Minutes You Give Your Body Before You Give Everyone Else It's still dark, the coffee hasn't kicked in, and the day is already lining up outs...
It's still dark, the coffee hasn't kicked in, and the day is already lining up outside your door like it's waiting for you to open it. Lunches, drop-offs, the text you forgot to answer, the thing at work that can't wait. Before any of that, there's a small window that belongs to nobody but you. Fifteen minutes. Not for productivity. For your body, before the whole world gets its hands on it.
That's the shift. You're not squeezing yourself in at the end of the list where there's nothing left. You're going first, just for a quarter of an hour, because the version of you that everyone needs today gets built in those fifteen minutes.
Here's the part nobody tells you when you're already carrying a lot. Moving your body is a stress reliever before it is anything else. The smaller jeans, the toned arms, whatever the world tells you to want, that's the byproduct. The point is what it does to your head.
When you take care of yourself physically, it starts helping you mentally almost right away. That's the whole reason to go first. You are not moving so you'll look a certain way by summer. You are moving because a body that got fifteen minutes of care handles the hard morning differently than one that got skipped over again. Your temple is the only one you get. You cannot pour out of it all day and never put anything back in.
And it does not have to be a whole thing. Fifteen minutes is not a plan you have to schedule around, or a class you have to drive to, or a routine you have to be good at. It's stretching on the kitchen floor while the coffee brews. It's walking the block before the house wakes up. It's a few minutes of something that gets your blood moving and reminds you that you have a body and it's yours. The Mayo Clinic has written plainly about how , and honestly, you already know it in your bones on the days you actually do it. You feel steadier. That's not in your imagination.
You are a woman in the world right now, which means you do not get to step back. Not as a mom, not as a daughter, not as the one everybody leans on. The breaks other people seem to get, they just do not show up for you the same way. Saying that out loud isn't complaining. It's true, and it deserves to be said.
So when you take fifteen minutes for your body before you give the rest of yourself away, you are not being selfish. Sit with that for a second, because a lot of us were taught the opposite. Putting yourself first, ahead of everyone else, even for a quarter of an hour, is sometimes the exact thing that makes getting through the day possible at all. You are not stealing that time from your kids. You are making sure the woman who shows up for them is steady on her feet.
There's a full circle in this that took me a long time to see. You take the fifteen minutes for your body. That helps your head. Because your head is steadier, you handle the day better. And the whole time, someone small is watching. They see you take care of yourself. They see you go through hard things and come out standing. That's the picture they carry into their own hard days someday. You don't have to sit them down and explain it. They just see it.
Some mornings you will not want to. You'll be running on almost nothing, the night was short, and fifteen minutes feels like fifteen you do not have. This is the exact morning it matters most, and also the exact morning it counts the most.
Because you're not weak on the days you don't feel like it and do it anyway. You're the opposite. Women can carry far more than they give themselves credit for, and you usually don't find out how much until you're already in it. The fifteen minutes on the morning you had every reason to skip is worth more than the fifteen on the morning it was easy. That's the one your body remembers. That's the one that proves something to you.
You don't have to earn it first, either. You don't have to feel ready, feel motivated, feel like yourself. You just have to start moving, and the feeling tends to catch up to the motion. Not always. But often enough that it's worth betting on.
After the fifteen minutes, you get up off the floor and the day is still there waiting. But you meet it differently. There's a reason a woman reaches for something that reminds her she's strong on the days she doesn't feel it. The BAWSE Trucker Hat isn't the point of any of this, it's a byproduct of the message underneath it. But when you put on something that says who you are, you carry a little of that reminder into the room with you. A wearable version of the thing you just did for yourself in the quiet.
Because that's what the fifteen minutes really is. Proof, first thing in the morning, that you did not disappear on yourself. That you're still in there. That before you gave the day everyone else, you gave the smallest piece of it back to you.
Start with fifteen. Some days that's the whole win. Everyone got where they needed to go, and you didn't skip yourself to make it happen. That counts. That's the whole job, and you're doing it.
