Stop Waiting for the Old You to Come Back You keep glancing over your shoulder for her. The version of you from before, the one who had it together, who...
You keep glancing over your shoulder for her. The version of you from before, the one who had it together, who laughed easier, who didn't feel this tired in her bones. You're waiting for her to walk back through the door like she just stepped out for a minute.
She's not coming back. And I mean that as good news.
The woman you're missing was made for a season you're not in anymore. She fit the life she had. The trouble is you're trying to squeeze her into a life that asks completely different things of you now.
She didn't carry what you carry today. She hadn't done the every-other-weekend goodbye, or stood in a house that got too quiet after everyone drove off, or figured out how to keep going when nothing about the day felt fair. She never had to.
So of course she doesn't fit. You've grown past her. That's not loss, that's the whole point of getting through something.
Here's what waiting actually costs you. Every day you spend hoping to feel like your old self is a day you're not building the new one. You're stalled at the door, watching for someone who isn't on her way.
Women don't get to step back and wait, anyway. You're still the mom, still the one everyone leans on, still the one keeping the whole thing standing. The world doesn't pause while you wait to feel ready.
That means the rebuilding has to happen inside the mess, not after it clears. You start becoming new while you're still carrying everything. There's no calm stretch coming where you'll have the time and the energy to figure yourself out first.
I know "become someone new" sounds enormous when you barely made it through today. It isn't one giant leap. It's the fifteen minutes you give your body before you give everyone else.
It's the water you drink, the walk you take when your head says no.
Movement is where I always start, and not because of how it makes you look. Your body is the one temple you get, and moving it is a stress reliever before it's ever anything else. It's about being able to carry what you're carrying without breaking.
And here's what nobody tells you about the physical part. It's the door into the mental part. When you start taking care of yourself physically, your head starts to clear almost right away, and a clearer head is what lets you keep going at all.
There's a woman I think about a lot. A single mom with two kids who thought her best days were behind her, sure the good stuff had already happened to somebody she used to be. What she found out is that life turns around the minute you start turning it around for yourself.
Her kids saw all of it. They watched her go through the depths and come out above them, and that becomes the map they follow through their own hard days later. They don't need a mom who never struggled.
They need to see one who struggled and kept going anyway.
That's the full circle. You overcome it, you're better for it, and they witnessed every step. You're not falling apart in front of them.
You're showing them exactly how it's done.
Missing who you were isn't weakness or drama. Something you loved is genuinely different now, and it's okay to feel that. You're allowed to be sad she doesn't fit anymore.
But don't set up camp there. The version of you you're becoming is stronger than the one you're mourning, because she's being built by hard things that the old you never had to face. Resilience isn't handed to you.
It's forged, and you're standing in the fire that's forging it right now.
God knew what He was doing when He made a woman. She was built for exactly this, to come back stronger after every setback, to bend without breaking. You are far more capable than you feel on the days you feel least capable.
The part that makes this hard is you can't see where it's going. You're pouring into a version of yourself you haven't met, on faith that she's worth building. It feels unfair to work this hard without proof it's leading anywhere.
I've had to trust the process when nothing about it made sense yet, when I couldn't see one single reason and kept going anyway. That's the real version of faith. Not the tidy kind where everything adds up, but the kind where you keep showing up before the reason ever shows itself.
The reason is there. You just can't see it from where you're standing. Keep going anyway.
Take the energy you've been spending looking backward and point it forward. Give it to the woman you're becoming, the one who's braver and more resilient than the one you keep grieving.
That's the whole heart of what we do at OK Tease Co., this community of women who've been where you are and are rebuilding right alongside you. You are seen here. You are not doing this alone, and you're not going backward.
You're rising. The old you got you here, and I'm grateful to her for that. But the new you is the one who's going to carry you the rest of the way, and she's already showing up.
You just have to stop waiting at the door and turn around to meet her.
